1-1 GENERAL INFORMATION
SURVEY POWER is specifically designed to be simple to understand
and easy to use. It requires very little knowledge of computers.
No commands need to be memorized. The menus allow easy movement
through the program so you can begin survey analysis in just a few
minutes.
The Status Line at the bottom of the screen displays the name of
the currently loaded survey file.
1-2 SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
IBM PC, XT, AT, OR PS/2 or compatible 512K
One disk drive (hard drive recommended)
Supported printer
MS-DOS version 2.1 or later
1-3 CAPABILITIES OF SURVEY POWER
SURVEY POWER can create surveys consisting of single choice,
multiple choice, text, weighting, and numeric questions. Each
survey can have up to 100 questions. The program will print the
survey, allow recording of survey responses, perform complete,
demographic, correlation, and text frequency analyses of the
responses. Any analysis may be displayed, printed out or saved as
an ASCII file to diskette. The blank survey can also be printed by
a printer or saved as an ASCII file to diskette.
Files created by SURVEY POWER can be kept on a separate diskette or
subdirectory. The number of surveys that can be counted is limited
only by the storage capacity of your diskette or hard disk and the
limitations of DOS. A mouse can also select files and move through
the menus and displays.
Back ups of all survey and data files created by SURVEY POWER can
be made by using the DOS COPY command of by using the Back-Up
SURVEY POWER files selection of the EXTRA Menu.

1-6 THE MENU BAR
SURVEY POWER contains 8 menus. Each menu name is displayed in the
MENU BAR at the top of the display screen. Each menu is explained
in the rest of this manual.
The eight menus of SURVEY POWER allow easy movement through the
program. The MENU BAR at the top of the screen serves as the
center of this program. Each menu is accessed by making selections
at the MENU BAR.
You can select a menu from the MENU BAR by:
1. Using the left or right arrow keys,
2. Holding down the Alternate key and pressing the first letter
of the menu name, or
3. Placing the mouse cursor on top of the menu name and pressing

3 lines of the previous question will be displayed again. This
will speed entry when questions are very similar.
SURVEY POWER Manual from WISCO Computing Page 10
2-4-2 QUESTION TYPES
Five question types are currently supported. Question types can
not be revised after any survey responses have been entered. The
question type determines the amount of space that will be reserved
in the response file. Other question types, based on user requests
will be supported in future versions of SURVEY POWER.
TYPE A
Enter the letter A if only 1 of the listed choices will be an
acceptable response. The type A single choice question allows only
one response (ABCDEFGHI).
TYPE B
Enter the letter B if more than one of the listed choices will be
acceptable responses. The type B multiple choice question with
equal weighting allows up to 9 letters (ABCDEFGHI) to be entered.
TYPE C
Enter the letter C if the responses are to be weighted. Reversed
weighting converts responses and total the ranked weights. (1 will
be converted to a weight of 9, 2 will be converted to a weight of
8, etc. Blank responses will be assigned a weight of 0). Actual
weighting keeps the assigned number as the weight.
TYPE D
Press the letter D if the responses to this question will be
numbers (integers) that can be added when the survey is analyzed.
Totals will be valid up to 32767.
TYPE E
Enter the letter E for the question type for text entry of up to 26
characters.
SURVEY POWER Manual from WISCO Computing Page 11
2-4-3 ENTERING RESPONSE TEXT
Up to 9 text responses can be entered for each question. If the 9
responses for a question are the same as the previous question,

RESPONSE MENU
4-1 RECORD RESPONSES
This selection is used to record responses to the selected survey.
The survey was selected when it was loaded from the FILE MENU.
Survey responses are saved after each set of survey responses has
been entered. The number of surveys that can be analyzed is
limited only by the storage capacity of your diskette or hard disk.
Help for movement to different questions and to review previous
questions is displayed near the bottom of the screen. The question
type determines which help messages are displayed.
After the response has been entered to your last survey question,
press Alt-S to Save this set of responses. After saving these
responses, the first question will be displayed again so you can
begin entering your next set of responses.
At any time during the recording of responses, an analysis may be
obtained. The analysis can be either displayed, printed out on
paper or saved as an ASCII file on a diskette.
The type A single choice question allows only one response
(ABCDEFGHI). After pressing one of these letters, the next
question will be displayed.
The type B multiple choice question with equal weighting allows up
to 9 letters (ABCDEFGHI) to be entered. Press the letters, then
the Enter key to move to the next question. The response letters
do not have to be in any particular order because they are weighted
equally.
The type C ranking question allows only the numbers 1 to 9 to be
entered. If the corresponding response is left blank, it will not
be used in the weighting. Press the Tab key to move from one entry
square to the next square. SURVEY POWER currently supports two
methods of weighting. Weighting methods are described with the
Settings Menu.
SURVEY POWER Manual from WISCO Computing Page 14
Responses to a type D question are totalled when the survey is
analyzed. Only integers can be entered. Totals up to 32767 will
be valid. Press the Enter key after each number is entered. You
can leave the position blank to represent 0.
The type E question allows for text entry responses. Each response
may be up to 26 characters long. Press the Enter key to move to
the next question. These responses can also be totalled to find
the 30 most common responses.
4-2 REVISE RESPONSES
After selecting the survey file, you will be asked the question
number. A chart displays the survey number and responses. Scroll
through the chart using the up and down arrow keys to display the
responses to be revised. The chart will scroll as you reach the
top or bottom to display more responses. Use the tab and shift-tab
keys to move left and right between responses for type C and D
questions. After finishing your revisions, press the ESCape key.
The press Y for Yes to save the revised responses.
4-3 DELETE SURVEY RESPONSES
This selection removes responses for one survey. For example, you
may have put in the responses to a survey twice. Obviously, your
results would be wrong. The total number of surveys will be
displayed. You will be asked to enter the survey number to delete.
Enter the number, and the results will be removed. The number of
surveys will be decreased by one. If you had previously performed
an analysis, a new analysis must be done because the data has
changed.
If you do not wish to remove any responses, press the Escape key to
return to the Main Menu.
SURVEY POWER Manual from WISCO Computing Page 15
COMPLETE AND PARTIAL MENUS
The COMPLETE MENU allows analysis of all surveys questions. The
PARTIAL MENU allows detailed analysis of one or two questions at a
time. Each analysis can be viewed, printed with a printer, or
exported to an ASCII file or Lotus .WKS file.
5-1 INFORMATION
The information selection describes the difference between total,
demographic, correlation, text frequency, numerical detail, and
weighting frequency analyses.
5-2 TOTAL ANALYSIS
A total analysis calculates totals of all responses and questions.
The question total is calculated based on the question type.
5-3 DEMOGRAPHIC ANALYSIS
A demographic analysis totals all surveys for any question and
choice. For example, the selected question could have a choice of
either male or female. A demographic analysis provides totals to
all questions when the respondent chose female to the selected
question.
A demographic analysis can be made from a respondents single choice
or Multiple choices (for example, the respondents chose either
choice A or B).
A Demographic (2) analysis provides totals to all questions when a
respondent matches the choices of 2 questions. Demographic (3),
(4), and (5) provides totals to all survey questions when the
respondent matches the choices of (3), (4), or (5) questions.
5-4 CORRELATION ANALYSIS
A correlation checks for relationships between choices made for two
survey questions. For each choice of the first question, the
totals of all choices of the second question are found. Question
types C and D (numerical entry) does not support correlation
analysis.
5-5 TEXT FREQUENCY ANALYSIS
This analysis is used to determine the frequency of text entries
for a type E question. The 10 most frequent responses can be
displayed when entering and revising responses by performing this
analysis. The 30 most common responses will be included when
totals are printed or saved as ASCII or Lotus .WKS files.
5-6 NUMERICAL DETAIL ANALYSIS
This analysis calculates totals, averages, minimums, maximums, and
response counts for each choice of a selected question. The
selected question must be either Type C or D.
The Demographic Numerical Analysis requires the first question to
be either Type A or B. The second question can be either Type C or
D. This analysis calculates totals, averages, minimums, maximums,
and response counts of the second question if the demographic
choice of the first question is matched.
5-7 WEIGHTING DETAIL ANALYSIS
This selection requires a Type C question. This analysis is used
to determine the frequency that each choice of the selected
question is chosen.
5-8 VIEW/PRINT AN ANALYSIS
This selection is used to view data that has been retrieved or
created by an analysis.
5-8-1 VIEW/PRINT COMPLETE MENU ANALYSES
The Up and Down arrows will move the cursor to the data immediately
above or below the current position. Pressing Tab and Shift-Tab
moves the cursor between the data fields. Pressing Alt-P will
print the complete summary of the question with the check mark.
Additional cursor movement directions are displayed at the bottom
of the screen.
SURVEY POWER Manual from WISCO Computing Page 16
Pressing Alt-Q will Quickly Display detailed information about the
question with the check mark. The complete question, response
text, responses, and percentage of total responses will be
displayed. Percentages are calculated to the nearest whole number
for type A and B questions. Type C questions display the weighted
totals and number of responses to each choice. Type D questions
display totals.
Pressing Alt-A will export the single question summary to an ASCII
file on diskette. ASCII files can be imported in almost any word
processor for final formatting before publication. The file name
will be Q##.ASC. The ## will be replaced by the question number.
Additional cursor movement instructions are displayed at the
bottom of the screen. Pressing Alt-P will print a copy of the
single question summary to your printer.
5-8-2 VIEW/PRINT A CORRELATION ANALYSIS
After selecting two questions to correlate, a chart is displayed
indicating how the responses for the choices of the first selected
question match the choices made for the second selected question.
To print a copy of this correlation summary, use the menu selection
"Print to Printer".
5-8-3 VIEW/PRINT A TEXT FREQUENCY ANALYSIS
After selecting a type E question, the most frequent responses for
the question will be displayed. To print a copy of this text
frequency summary, use the menu selection "Print to Printer".
5-8-4 VIEW/PRINT A NUMERICAL DETAIL ANALYSIS
This selection will display a chart of the selected Type C or D
question. In addition to the totals, the average, minimum,
maximum, and response count for each choice of the selected
question will be displayed. To print a copy of this summary, use
the menu selection "Print to Printer".
5-8-5 VIEW/PRINT A WEIGHTED FREQUENCY DETAIL
This selection displays a chart of the frequency each choice was
chosen for a type C question. To print a copy of this summary, use
the menu selection "Print to Printer".
5-9 PRINTING AN ANALYSIS
This selection will print the most recently performed analysis with
this menu to the printer.
5-10 EXPORT TO AN ASCII FILE
This selection will create an analysis file on the export drive.
An ASCII file is readable by most programs. SURVEY POWER will add
the extension .ASC to the survey file name. If the subdirectory
doesn't exist, SURVEY POWER will ask if the new subdirectory should
be created. The export drive was selected with the SETTINGS MENU.
This ASCII file will be the last analysis (correlation, text entry,
numerical, or weighting detail) performed with this menu.
5-11 EXPORT TO A LOTUS .WKS FILE
This selection creates an analysis file on the export drive that
can be read directly by spreadsheet programs that can read .WKS
files. SURVEY POWER will add the extension .WKS to the survey file
name. If the subdirectory doesn't exist, SURVEY POWER will ask if
the new subdirectory should be created. These files make it easy
to graph an analysis with LOTUS 1-2-3. The export drive was
selected with the SETTINGS MENU.
The created file will be the last partial analysis (correlation,
text entry, numerical, or weighting detail) that was performed.
SURVEY POWER Manual from WISCO Computing Page 17
SETTINGS MENU
6-1 PERCENTAGE CALCULATION METHODS
Percentages can be calculated from either total responses or total
number of surveys. A demographic analysis always uses
total number of responses.
6-2 PRINTING THE DEMOGRAPHIC COVER SHEET
A cover sheet can be printed for Demographic Analysis indicating
which questions and choices were chosen for the calculations.
6-3 TABLES WITH MISSING DATA
If there is no matching data, either a zero or space can be
displayed and printed.
6-4 WEIGHTING CALCULATION METHODS
Type C questions can be weighted with either actual or reversed
numbers. Actual uses the response for the weight. For example, a
question could state "Rank your top 3 reasons for ..." The highest
ranking is considered to be 1, the lowest 9. The lowest number
would be considered the most preferred. If Reversed weighting is
used, SURVEY POWER converts the responses to a ranked weight. (1
will be converted to a weight of 9, 2 will be converted to a weight
of 8, etc. Blank responses will be assigned a weight of 0).
6-5 PRINTING THE COMPANY HEADING
If Yes is selected, the Company name and address entered on the
next 4 lines of this menu will be centered and printed on the first
page of reports printed by SURVEY POWER.
6-6 DRIVE CONTAINING SURVEYS AND DATA
This selection is used to change the current drive or sub-directory
that contains the survey questions and responses. If the
subdirectory doesn't exist, SURVEY POWER will ask if the new
subdirectory you entered should be created.

Leave the entry blank to store these files created by SURVEY POWER
in the same subdirectory as the SURVEY.EXE program.
6-8 CHANGING SCREEN COLORS
Screen colors may be changed to your personal preference, or
because the regular colors may be hard to see on a lap top.
Up to 127 color combinations may be used by SURVEY POWER. When
this selection is made, a chart showing the 127 color combinations
and their associated numbers is displayed.
Following are the default (starting) values for screen colors. You
may enter different numbers from the displayed chart:
Color Monochrome
Normal Screen Colors: 023 007

7-7 FOREIGN LANGUAGE, GREEK, AND MATH SYMBOLS
Foreign language, Greek, and math symbols can be printed by
SURVEY POWER, provided your printer supports these characters.
Alternate-F1 displays these codes when entering text or responses.
These characters can be included in your text and responses by
holding the alternate key down and entering the 3 digit number on
the number pad of the IBM keyboard.
Most printers support international character sets. These character
sets are the most commonly supported by compatible printers.
Different manufacturers call the character sets by different names.
